  • Background

The current trends of servitization and digitalization challenge today’s business world to rethink existing value propositions and business models. In this context, combining traditional physical products with new digital services, which are empowered by sensors and connectivity, in so-called smart (Product-)Service Systems (sPSS) provides a great opportunity for innovation. However, becoming a provider of sPSS poses severe challenges and risks for established firms and requires a huge effort in digital transformation, both internally and externally.

    Research Goal

The objective of this thesis is to develop a better understanding of contemporary efforts of established organizations to become a smart product-service system provider, and to identify existing challenges and needs alongtheir journey. With a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), this thesis aims to paint a clear and detailed picture of the state-of-the-art in Germany to alignfuture research with practical challenges. In detail, we want you to plan, organize, conduct and evaluate an interview study consisting of 12-20 interviews with known and, yet unknown representatives of German SMEs. However, this thesis will be a very practical task and allows you to get in contact with practitioners in various industries and settings.
