Understanding B2B Platform and Ecosystem Evolution

Understanding B2B Platform and Ecosystem Evolution

Tobias Enders, Lara Riefle

For the better part of a decade, the emergence of digital platforms has transformed industries from the ground up. While consumer-focused platforms such as Amazon and ebay enjoy broad popularity, business-to-business (B2B) platforms are just at the verge of unveiling their potential for collaboration and value co-creation. Industrial B2B platforms are a vehicle that allow digital ecosystems to emerge over time; however, the process of platform and ecosystem evolution has remained a black box in research for the most part.

The aim of this thesis is to develop an understanding of the evolution of digital ecosystems using the case of industrial B2B (IoT) platforms. Questions arising concern the actors involved, their relationship towards each other and the flow of information. By conducting a qualitative content analysis, the student will analyze real-world platforms and derive learning how they contributed to the emergence of a digital ecosystem. Extant literature as a starting point will be provided.
